Highway 101 near Gilroy. It looked so Holga-like I just had to stop and snap a photo.

Most mornings in Southern Baja I'd be out early. I like catching the soft, morning light and the cool temperatures.

I took this photo a little over a year ago in Mulegé, Baja California Sur. I'm usually running six months to a year behind on my finished printing. The process goes like this: after developing the film and making contact sheets, I edit and select the negatives I want to print. I then make a bunch of work prints on resin coated paper. The work prints that I like, I keep out on my light table or stick up on the wall by my desk. After a while, if I still feel good about the photo I'll make a nice fiber print. I tone those finished prints with selenium or sepia toner. Finally, I hand color the photograph if coloring works with the subject.

I filled out an online questionnaire about Holga use the other day. Afterward, I went to my boxes and looked at some of my early Holga photos. They went back to 1992. This one is from 1995. When I made it, I was thinking of Edward Weston and his photographs of all sorts of fruits, vegetables and plant matter. This photo is a Holga homage to Mr. Weston. (click and it gets bigger)

I've been promoting my photos with book cover designers. The "memories" series is moody and dreamlike and I think makes eye-catching book covers. My photograph was used on the front, back and side of the UK and European edition of Lorrie Moore's critically acclaimed book, A Gate at the Stairs. Book cover design by Miriam Rosenbloom, Senior Designer, Faber and Faber. See the photo here: www.jonkerseyphotography.com/memories/book2.htm
