Copal is the resinous sap of a Mexican tree, burned as incense since the time of the Aztecs. The scent attracts spirits, drawing them home. It is also used to cleanse the area, and to ward off evil.

On the Governors Island Ferry, headed to the 10th Annual Jazz Age Lawn Party. It was quite a scene. Thousands of people dressed in jazz age fashion, eating, drinking, dancing and being seen on a hot August afternoon. Alice, we’re not in Santa Cruz!

Friendly and self-assured, Aziza spoke Arabic, French and Spanish. She and Olive got along famously moving back and forth from Spanish to French. Meeting her was one of the highlights of our time in Morocco.
