A Moment

Remember the scene in the Movie “Smoke” when Auggie (Harvey Keitel) is showing Paul (William Hurt) his photographs of the street corner outside his cigar store? Paul looks through the photos very quickly and says that they all look the same. Auggie tells him he’s going too fast, he needs to look at the photos slowly. He points out the changes in light and season and the look on people’s faces. Smoke is a movie about the importance of the little things in life.

On the Rope

ropeguy

The Beach, The Street continued….here a climber works out on a rope at Seacliff State Beach.  In “Bystander”, the great book on the history of street photography, the authors say that the street “is any public place where a photographer could take pictures of subjects who are unknown to him and whenever possible, unconscious of his presence.”

The Beach, The Street

riodelmar2A famous street photographer said he’d never seen an interesting photograph taken at the beach. When one lives in coastal California the beach doubles as “the street”.  What I mean is, it’s our public space, our Times Square, our Melrose Avenue.  It can be an alfresco art gallery, a church, a venue for an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting.  Weddings and workouts take place at the beach. There’s nearly always someone or something to photograph at the beach. Here, a patient photographer can snap a moment in time unlike any other.
