I was sitting at my desk Saturday, waiting for the rain to ease up so I could go out and make some photos. I've had this umbrella photo around in a couple of forms for more years than I care to say. Sometimes this happens. I'm undecided. Should I go further with this? Well, Saturday I was doodling and finally finished the photo (for now). And yes, the umbrella was pink!

The morning we left the Dominican Republic large waves from Hurricane Tomas pounded the Malecón in Santo Domingo. This area is usually calm and waveless. Down graded to a tropical storm, Tomas still caused serious flooding in the Dominican Republic and Haiti.

Sign I liked. (Outside a casino in Juan Dolio)
Scene I liked. (Inside Catedral Santa Maria de la Encarnación, built between 1521 and 1540.)
Photo I like. Could be titled "Photos and Rat". When some workers saw I was interested in the photos they had cleared out of a building and piled on the sidewalk, they really got into showing them to me. They gave me a few choice 5x7s.

Basketball is the second most popular sport in the Dominican Republic after baseball. A couple of these kids were really good! Can you name a Dominican player in the NBA? (Al Holford Atlanta Hawks. This season he's averaging 16.4 points and 9.5 rebounds a game.)

You don't see many gringos in Constanza so the local kids were curious about us. They practiced their English on us and we worked on our Spanish.

Small-engine motorcycles are the most common way to travel in the Dominican Republic. It's not unusual to see three and sometimes four people riding on one. I took this family portrait in Constanza, a farming town in the mountains north of Santo Domingo.
